New to Contact Improv? A letter to a Newcomer to Contact Improvisation

This is an email I wrote to a friend that was considering going to a contact improv class in Toronto for the first time and wanted to share it here because I think it’s relevant to anyone who’s thinking about starting contact improv!

Dear Aspiring Contact Improver,

I wish I could be at contact improv to give you a big hug on Sunday (or whatever day you’re going). My recommendation is to go to the class if you can and then see if it feels right to stay for the jam afterward.

If anything ever feels weird or painful then it definitely is weird and not “part of the form.” Say no or say you need a drink of water and get away from the person. During the class or the jam.

I feel a bit protective of you… can you tell?

I had some weird stuff happen to me when I started and I thought it was just part of the dance but now I realize it was weird and creepy and not okay and not part of the dance. Anyways, if you ever have issues there’s a complaints process and a women’s circle etc.

But mostly I love to dance and love that you’re going to try it. I’ve been dancing a lot here and am already making a cuddle puddle of friends who are socially conscious and awake and playful.

Let me know how your first class goes!!

Sending love,

P.S. Seriously, email me at about your experiences!! I love contact improv and there’s nothing more I love to talk about more! Or if you’re cool with it being public – leave a comment below!

P.S.S. And if something weird or creepy happens definitely email me! I will be on your side no matter what part of the world you live in! Same email –
